Who we are

Main Line Perinatal Associates (MLPA) is a group of Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists (obstetricians who focus on "high-risk" pregnancies) as well as a Perinatal Geneticist. We provide pregnancy care to our own patients, usually with some complicating factor to their pregnancy. We evaluate these high-risk patients, develop a management plan, and deliver their babies.

We also provide other obstetricians with assistance in the management of their high-risk patients, usually in the setting of pregnancy complications. We assist most of the obstetricians of Main Line Healthcare and Women's Healthcare Group of Pennsylvania. This is usually performed in one of our Perinatal Testing Centers. We usually assess the patient's fetuses with ultrasound (assessing gestational age and fetal growth, evaluating for birth defects and genetic conditions). We also provide genetic assessments (blood screening for genetic issues and fetal testing including amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling) and assessments of fetal well-being. Some patients require a more comprehensive management plan, which is performed in a consultation.

We see patients at 6 Perinatal Testing Centers across Southeastern Pennsylvania.

What is Maternal-Fetal Medicine?

General obstetricians care for most pregnant women. Sometimes pregnancies can be more complicated ("high-risk") than usual. Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists have additional training so that they can care for and monitor high-risk pregnancies. Perinatal geneticists have additional training in the diagnosis and management of genetic disorders in pregnancy. All of the physicians in our practice have specialty training in either Maternal-Fetal Medicine or Perinatal Genetics.

Complications can exist before a pregnancy or begin during pregnancy.
We routinely encounter high-risk issues such as:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes and thyroid disease
  • Maternal and fetal infections
  • Kidney or intestinal disorders
  • High blood pressure
  • Preterm labor and delivery
  • Pregnancy loss
  • Birth defects
  • Placental problems
  • Multiples

We also offer a variety of procedures in pregnancy, such as:

  • Ultrasound to screen for birth defects or growth problems
  • 3D/4D ultrasound
  • Non-stress testing
  • First trimester nuchal translucency screening
  • Doppler velocimetry
  • Cervical cerclage
  • Chorionic villus sampling
  • Amniocentesis
  • External cephalic version
  • Biophysical profile
